Finding Savings in Your Healthcare Programs
Michael Rodgers, Jr., Atlantic Benefits Services

As healthcare costs continue to increase at an annual rate of 15-25%, HR professionals and financial executives are scrambling to find new ways to control them, and are hearing that there are few or no answers. This is untrue. Organizations both large and small across the country are increasingly using data analysis as a weapon in the cost control of their healthcare and saving tens of thousands of dollars. They are using new tools to:

  • Adjust benefit plan options in response to cost and utilization patterns
  • Calculate the value of such financial carrots and sticks such as lower co-pays for generic drugs and higher or percentage-based co-pays for ER visits or certain diagnostic tests
  • Educate senior management on the financial impact of employees' healthcare choices
  • Compare alternative plans and negotiate better deals with health plans and healthcare providers
  • Analyze alternatives such as Consumer Driven Health Care (CDHC), Health Spending Accounts (HSA) and Health Reimbursement Arrangements (HRA)

You will also learn how you can use carefully planned data gathering and analysis to lower your healthcare costs, and begin developing the skills you need to make data analysis a working tool that you will increasingly depend on.

Evolution of Time and Labor Management
Dorothy Vetrovec, Time America, Inc.

The popularity of web-based time and labor management is no surprise. It's user-friendly, provides on-demand access and information and enables streamlined employee time and attendance tracking (especially for companies with remote employees or multiple locations). What may not be as well understood is the long-term impact that a web-based time and labor management system can have on an organization. Thousands of dollars and man-hours can be saved by implementing a web-based labor management solution that produces real-time results. By leveraging the Internet and new technologies such as VoIP and biometrics, it doesn't have to be that way.

HR Outsourcing - One Size Fits All...Or Does It?
Rufino Lomba, Watson Wyatt

Many companies are considering outsourcing or re-evaluating their outsourced deal. Is this the "right time for you" and "does one size fit all"?

At the end of the day, it's about what outsourcing means to you! What are your business drivers? How will you measure success? What are the risks you should be aware of? And what, if anything, should you be outsourcing?

This session looks at the market trends in outsourcing, what is being outsourced (business drivers), risks associated with outsourcing, and key considerations such as developing costing models, support (service delivery) models, the importance of metrics in an outsourcing deal and actively managing the deal itself. The session concludes with some lessons learned.

Taking Shield from Cupid's Arrows: Workplace Romance and Sexual Harassment Claims
Julie A. Moore, Esquire, Employment Practices Group

Romances at work are common. Employees often work long hours and spend a great deal of time socializing inside, and sometimes outside, the office with co-workers. When the relationship ends, the stakes increase - for sexual harassment claims. A former Boeing Chief Executive, accused of sending sexually graphic emails to his paramour in the office, is an example of these high-stakes relationships. Recognizing the issues, developing policies and practices in advance, and responding appropriately are critical. It's a delicate balance of privacy interests and risk management. Issues covered include:

  • Examining your sexual harassment policy
  • Assessing your culture for fraternization in the workplace
  • Understanding liability issues associated with office dating
  • Considering preventative measures such as "love contracts"

Automated Org Charts Made Easy
Marc Ramos, Aquire, Inc. (formerly TimeVision)

Does this sound like your organization? I know we have inaccurate reporting relationships but don't know how to fix it, I can't manage what I can' t see, and raw data is impossible to successfully analyze. I can't visualize who reports to whom, where employees are located, their skill sets, etc.

These are common business problems that organizations face everyday. Utilizing a basic business tool like the org chart is a step in the right direction, but many questions should be asked prior to selecting an org charting tool. Can you even connect to your existing data? Are you capturing the type of information you really need and in the right format? Is the data gathered being used? Are you certain your employee information is current? The goal of this presentation is to help answer these questions, as well as offer real life examples of how your org chart can help you achieve organizational success.

Taking a Systems Approach to Developing an HR Strategy
Bob Kustka, CHR Partners

There is increasing pressure in this globally competitive environment to ensure that we get maximum benefit on all of our expenditures. We have invested heavily in technology to leverage the speed of information and reduce our time to accomplish projects. Companies have taken a more systematic approach to managing their supply chain to improve efficiency and take cost out at all points in the process. Our financial tools have become increasingly smarter and 'real time' allowing us better oversight of our capital. Yet, in the area where we have both one of our greatest spends, and one of our potentially greatest assets, our people, organizations often take a fragmented and reactive approach. Frequently today, companies stovepipe their HR functionalities and fail to understand the interconnectivity that needs to be tied together to better understand how key decisions are tied to the organization's strategic business plan.

A Human Resource Systems Approach groups the functionalities into four quadrants focusing on protecting the business, defining the direction, maximizing resources and building the culture. Understanding how this works can provide you with a framework for decision making and developing an HR strategic plan that accurately supports the overall organizational strategy.

Canadian Round Table

Typically, referred candidates:

  • Are less expensive to recruit and more qualified
  • Stay at the company longer
  • Adapt to the company culture more quickly
  • Take less time to find
  • Accept employment offers more readily because they already trust your employees and company

Learn how easy and inexpensive it is to enact an Employee Referral system for your organization.
